Fathers Day Cards

Happy Memorial Day everyone!  While today is a national holiday for all of us here in the USA, let take a look ahead here to get you all thinking about another holiday that is right around the corner; Father's Day.  Father's Day is Sunday, June 19th this year.  Even though we are observing and remembering all of those who have dedicated themselves to our country,  let take a look at cards to help remember our fathers on their special day...

Frugal Finds- Coffee Filters

Starting today, we're looking at having a monthly feature using items we've picked up at the local dollar store, hardware store or thrift shop. If you want to play along, feel free to show us what you created with the same items!

I picked up a package of 100 basket type filters at the dollar store one day to see what I could do with them, and I extended the challenge to Kerri and Christine. Ideas for me were slow at first, but they seem to keep coming, so don't be surprised if you see another feature on these soon! Try using ink and mists on them, folding, cutting, punching, embossing, stamping, layering and crumpling! I'm also waiting to try making pleated/ruffled style borders with them by sewing them into gathers...

 Practical Scrapper Erin

For this layout, I folded basket filters into ( 3 times) a wedge, trimmed them into the shapes you see, misted them, and once dry, stamped them using Staz On inks.

Practical Scrapper Kerri

On this crisp fall layout, Kerri misted her filters with Tattered Angels Sugar Maple Glimmer Mist, inked with Distress Ink, then embossed all 4 layers while wet using her Cuttlebug. Once dry, she applied ink again and then cut into a circle to make her flower center.

Christine's Card is Going to be published in the December 2011 Cards Magazine...look for it there!
On this adorable card, Christine folded her filters in half and then half again, and then started layering them.  She added pink pearls to help break up all the white.

Fan (aka Medallion) Flower with a twist Tutorial

I saw this tutorial as I was looking for Fabulous Finds this week.  I thought it was a unique, fresh idea and that y'all would enjoy it.  Thanks Ashley for letting us feature it..

1. A thin strip of white cardstock. I use 12in long strips. (You could use a piece of patterned paper but I like to create the color with mists which is why I use white cardstock)
2. Sissors
3. Glue dots (regular size)
4. Mists
5. A flower center

Fold the paper strip into an accordion shape. Basically start to make a regular fan flower.

Fabulous Finds Friday May 27th

It's a Great Friday!  It's the start of a long weekend and the end of school for my kids, which means I get them all to myself for a few months!  I get a little sick of sharing them with school :)  What are your summer plans?  One of mine (inspired by our designer Jodi) is to teach my 7 year old how to use a sketch when we scrap together.  Hope you enjoy this weeks finds!  If you haven't already shared a link to your blog, please do!

Have a marvelous weekend!

Challenge Me Tuesday: Customized Raw Chipboard

**Designer projects are not always linked in our posts, but you can always find their blogs in our sidebar or in the staff tab**

You know the stuff- most of us have tons of it- drab grayish brown cardboard in various shapes and sizes. How often do you think to use yours? what's your favorite way to alter it? The following are reader and design team submissions with loads of inspiration on just how to incorporate raw chipboard onto your next project. I've tried to include blog links whenever possible, so you can get more information on the techniques used.  This week we're looking for projects using doilies. Send your submissions to practicalscrapperslayouts(at)gmail(dot)com.

Scraptastic Kit Club Feature & Giveaway

This month we are featuring Scraptastic Kit Club.  First off I have to say they have an awesome, easy to navigate site with pictures of their kits (yes I said kits) located right on the front page!  In addition to their kits they also have optional add-ons!  I have been following their blog for awhile now and even had a project from it on my Fabulous Finds Friday recently.  Their blog is chalk full of great ideas and gorgeous projects!  They also have a designers gallery to give you ideas on ways to use your kit.  Get the idea I'm loving how full of ideas their sites are?!?

I worked with the March Kit titled "Princess for a Day."   It was a very balanced kit, plenty of embellishments, letter stickers, and paper.  They were generous with the carstock, making it easy to complete whole layouts without delving into my own stash.  I created six projects and have plenty left over to do at least a couple more things.

I don't think I've ever touched this shade of brown before...it was fun to watch it combine nicely with pink and blue (and my kids too!)

This one was a total pain to crop and edit because of my tiny pink border!  It's actually my favorite in person, but not in picture...funny how that works huh!

How about me getting my boys in on a kit with "princess" in the title :)?  I took the kit with me to a friends house to scrap.  I didn't pack much in additional product, just some tools and some scraps...I think it worked out fabulously.  I was one very tired mom, but still managed to knock out a lot!

Scraptastic is generously giving away a kit to one of you!
We'll pick a winner from one of you who completes the following:
-Make sure you are a follower here
-Leave a comment telling us what your favorite kit from Scraptastic is
-To get an extra entry become a follower on their blog and make sure we know it.
Deadline to enter is May 26th.

White Projects

Judging by the amount of submissions, I'd say white is challenging our readers right now.  Not only that but projects with a lot of white are hard to photograph and edit.  Using a lot of white in projects can provide a nice, crisp look especially enhanced by a quick pop of color.  Thanks to those of you that sent in submissions!  Check out these projects for some inspiration on using lots of white.

Challenge Me Tuesday: Cameos and Silhouettes and a new challenge!

Good Tuesday morning! This week's challenge item was cameos or silhouettes. It seems the cameo is a hot new trend right now, with the emergence of the gorgeous embellishments from companies like Webster's pages, and chipboard silhouettes by Maya Road. If you've got a Cricut machine, A Child's Year cartridge has some amazing silhouettes on it too. We received so many gorgeous projects this week, we had a hard time choosing among them. Keep your submissions coming! We'd also be happy to hear about your favorite Cameo or Silhouette products in the comments!
* keep reading to find out our next challenge item!*

Here are some great projects from our design team and readers:

Mom Layouts

Since we just celebrated Mothers Day we thought we'd share some layouts about moms and their kids today.  If you are like me...you don't often get your picture taken.  I know I'd rather take cute kiddo pics :)  But I dug some out to share in a layout and I have to admit it was kinda fun to see myself splashed all over a page!

Practical Scrapper Christine created this page about all the roles she fills as a mom
